TOWN OF PARIS APPROVES REFERENDUM QUESTION

November 6th ballot will ask voters to approve appointed clerk-treasurer position

Paris, WI – At its July 24 meeting, the Paris Town Board passed an ordinance making the office of Town Clerk-Treasurer an appointed position. State statute requires voters to approve the ordinance via a referendum question on the November 6, 2018 ballot.

Out of the 1,255 towns in Wisconsin, more than 400 have converted from elected clerks, treasurers and clerk-treasurers to appointed positions. Appointed clerk-treasurers do not have to be town residents, giving the Town access to a larger candidate pool.

“As our current clerk-treasurer looks toward retirement, the town board is aware that there is limited interest from other residents to run for the position,” said Town Chairman Virgil Gentz. “Transitioning to an appointed position would allow the Town flexibility to find a qualified individual that will continue providing quality services to residents.”

If approved, the ordinance will go into effect when the incumbent clerk-treasurer’s term expires in April 2019.  The town board will set the qualifications, job description and benefits. The appointed term may not exceed three years.
